Bio
Wilhelm Kempff (1895–1991) was a German pianist and composer renowned for his interpretations of Beethoven, Schubert, and Schumann. Born in Jüterbog, he studied at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik and quickly established himself as one of the leading pianists of the 20th century. His recordings, particularly the complete Beethoven sonatas and concertos, remain benchmarks for clarity, structural insight, and lyrical warmth. Beyond the concert stage, Kempff was also active as a teacher and festival director, founding the Kempff Foundation in Italy to nurture young pianists. His extensive discography on labels such as Deutsche Grammophon continues to influence generations of performers and listeners.
