Agustín Lara (1900–1970) was a Mexican composer and singer whose romantic boleros shaped Latin American popular music for decades. Born in Veracruz, he moved to Mexico City as a child and began performing in cabarets and on radio in the 1920s. His songs, including “Granada,” “Solamente una vez,” and “Veracruz,” became standards across the Spanish-speaking world and were recorded by artists from Pedro Infante to Frank Sinatra. Lara’s melodies combined lush orchestration with intimate, poetic lyrics that captured longing and nostalgia. He toured extensively in Latin America, the United States, and Spain, and his work helped define the golden age of Mexican cinema through numerous film scores. His influence endures in the bolero repertory and in the generations of songwriters who followed.
