Otto Klemperer

Otto Klemperer was a German-born conductor and composer who became one of the leading interpreters of the Austro-German symphonic and operatic repertoire in the twentieth century. Born in Breslau in 1885, he studied in Frankfurt and Berlin and rose to prominence as music director of the Kroll Opera in Berlin during the late 1920s. After fleeing Nazi Germany he held posts in Los Angeles, Budapest, and finally London, where he led the Philharmonia Orchestra from 1955 onward, producing a celebrated series of recordings for EMI. His later performances were marked by broad tempos, architectural clarity, and a monumental yet humane approach to Beethoven, Mahler, and Bruckner. Klemperer also composed operas, symphonies, and chamber works, though his reputation rests primarily on his conducting legacy. He died in Zurich in 1973.
