Sir John Eliot Gardiner is an English conductor and musicologist born in 1943. He founded the Monteverdi Choir in 1964 and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique in 1989, specializing in historically informed performances of Baroque and Classical repertoire. Gardiner has recorded extensively for Deutsche Grammophon and Philips, including complete cycles of Bach cantatas and Beethoven symphonies. He served as principal conductor of the Orchestre de Paris and the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra.
